What is Brain and Spine Surgery (Neurosurgery)?

Brain and Neurosurgery is a medical specialization that involves the diagnosis, treatment, and surgical interventions of disorders related to the central and peripheral nervous system. Medical professionals specialized in this field are called “Brain Surgeons” or “Neurosurgeons.”

The brain and nervous system play a unique and crucial role in governing all bodily functions. The brain, spinal cord, and nerves form a complex network. Therefore, problems occurring within this system can have significant consequences. Brain and Neurosurgery work to diagnose and treat these issues.

The specialization of Brain and Neurosurgery encompasses conditions such as brain tumors, stroke, epilepsy, brain hemorrhages, nerve injuries, spinal disorders, and degenerative nerve diseases. Brain and Neurosurgeons utilize technology and surgical techniques to diagnose and treat these conditions, aiming to improve patients’ quality of life.

Brain and Neurosurgery require a multidisciplinary approach. Specialists collaborate with doctors specialized in other medical fields to provide comprehensive care for patients. With a patient-centered approach, they evaluate each individual’s condition, understand their needs, and develop the most suitable treatment plan.

Being a challenging and delicate field, Brain and Neurosurgery continuously adapts to technological and scientific advancements. This enables patients to achieve better outcomes and enhance their quality of life.

As Dr. Özgür Akşan and his team, we take pride in offering services tailored to each patient’s needs with the latest medical knowledge, technological innovations, and personalized treatment approaches.

The scope of diagnosis and treatment in brain and neurosurgery is not limited to clearly evident diseases such as stroke or brain hemorrhage. While emergencies like these require immediate intervention, there are also less obvious symptoms and signs that can indicate nervous system problems. For instance, symptoms such as tingling or numbness in the hands or feet, weakness, coordination problems, headaches, dizziness, back or neck pain may be related to the nervous system.

If you are experiencing such symptoms, it may be beneficial to consult a brain and neurosurgery specialist. Expert brain surgeons will evaluate you to understand the cause of the symptoms and initiate the appropriate diagnostic and treatment process.

As Dr. Özgür Akşan and his team, with our dedication to our patients’ health, we take each symptom seriously and take the necessary steps to make the correct diagnosis. Early diagnosis and intervention can minimize the effects of nervous system disorders and help you achieve better outcomes.

Spinal disorders are also within the scope of expertise in brain and neurosurgery. The spine is a vital part of the central nervous system, and spinal problems can lead to serious discomfort.

Conditions such as back or neck pain, spinal deformities (scoliosis, kyphosis, lordosis), disc herniation, nerve root compression, and spinal tumors are some of the issues that may require consultation with a brain and neurosurgery specialist. In such disorders, the nerves or spinal cord tissue are directly affected. For example, if you have persistent pain in the back or neck region or curvature of the spine, you can consult with brain and neurosurgery specialists.

Brain and neurosurgery specialists evaluate spinal disorders using advanced imaging techniques and clinical assessments. Depending on the severity of the symptoms, the underlying condition, and the patient’s situation, they suggest and perform appropriate treatment options.

Treatment begins with accurate diagnosis and determining the suitable treatment methods. The management of spinal disorders may require surgical or non-surgical interventions. The selection of the appropriate treatment option will depend on the severity of the symptoms, the underlying condition, and the patient’s situation.

Spinal disorders can affect your quality of life and lead to more serious consequences over time. Therefore, when experiencing symptoms such as back or neck pain, nerve compression, limited mobility, or other spinal disorder symptoms, it is important to consult a brain and neurosurgery specialist.
