What is this Condition?

An intrathecal drug pump is an implanted drug delivery system used in selected patients with resistant chronic pain or muscle spasticity. The medication is delivered directly into the cerebrospinal fluid surrounding the spinal cord, to the area where it is needed. This allows therapeutic effects to be achieved with much smaller doses without requiring the high doses taken orally or intravenously, and side effects from systemic drug distribution can be reduced. The pump operates with a small reservoir placed under the skin, and the medication inside is refilled at regular intervals. Before deciding who is suitable for this method, careful patient selection and usually a trial (test) process is applied; during the trial, the patient's response to the medication is measured.

Diagnosis Methods

This section describes a treatment method, not a disease; diagnosis is always made according to the underlying primary condition. When deciding if this method is appropriate, the severity of pain or muscle contraction, response to previously administered treatments, and the patient's functional level in daily life are evaluated. In suitable candidates, a trial dose is applied before permanent pump placement, and the decision is clarified by measuring the patient's response to this dose.

Treatment Methods

The pump is placed under the skin through a minor surgical procedure, and the medication dose in the pump is adjusted according to the patient at subsequent follow-ups. As the medication reservoir is depleted, it is refilled at planned intervals; the proper functioning of the device and possible complications are monitored regularly. These follow-ups are an integral part of treatment. The goal is not to completely eliminate the disease, but to sustainably improve the quality of daily life by controlling pain or muscle contraction.
