What is This Treatment?

Microsurgery is a precise surgical technique performed using an operating microscope. In spine and brain surgery, it allows intervention without damaging healthy tissue by clearly visualizing even the smallest structures. It is the gold standard method for lumbar and cervical disc surgeries.

Treatment Process

Surgery is performed under general anesthesia. The skin incision is approximately 2-3 cm. The herniation is visualized with the surgical microscope, and the disc fragment pressing on the nerve is removed. Patients are usually discharged the same day or the next day.

When is it used?

  • Nerve root compression caused by disc disease such as lumbar and cervical herniation
  • Compression syndromes resulting from spinal canal stenosis or foraminal stenosis
  • Brain tumors, certain vascular diseases, and selected intracranial lesions
  • Delicate neurosurgical procedures where protection of nerve tissue is critical

Recovery and planning

The recovery process after microsurgery depends more on the scope of the surgery performed than on the technique itself. Mobilization may be earlier in simple spinal decompressions, whereas follow-up duration may be planned longer for brain and complex spinal surgeries. Preoperative expectation management, clear explanation of what problem the technique aims to solve, and controlled postoperative rehabilitation are important for successful outcomes.
