What is this Condition?

Carotid artery disease is the accumulation of lipid-calcific deposits (plaque) within the major arteries that supply blood to the brain (commonly called carotid arteries), leading to narrowing of the vessel. This stenosis can reduce blood flow to the brain or cause small emboli to break off and travel to the brain, increasing the risk of stroke and transient ischemic attack (TIA). The disease often progresses without symptoms for a long time. Therefore, early detection and control of risk factors (hypertension, cholesterol, diabetes, smoking) form the foundation of prevention.

Diagnosis Methods

The initial diagnostic modality is typically color-coded duplex ultrasound (carotid doppler) of the neck vessels; when necessary, CT or MR angiography confirms the degree of stenosis. The symptomatic status of the stenosis and the patient's overall cardiovascular risk are evaluated comprehensively. Treatment decisions are based on this holistic assessment.

Treatment Methods

Treatment is primarily based on antiplatelet medications, cholesterol-lowering drugs (statins), blood pressure and glucose control, and healthy lifestyle modifications. In selected patients, surgery to remove plaque from the vessel (carotid endarterectomy) or placement of a stent within the artery may be considered. The choice of treatment method is determined by evaluating the degree of stenosis, presence or absence of symptoms, and appropriateness of intervention for the patient.
