What is this Condition?

Choroid plexus tumors are rare neoplasms originating from the tissue that produces cerebrospinal fluid within the brain's ventricles. They are quite uncommon and occur particularly in infants and young children. The majority of these tumors are benign (papilloma) and generally provide a permanent solution when completely removed surgically. A smaller proportion may be more aggressive or malignant (carcinoma) and require additional treatment. The tumor causes fluid accumulation in the brain (hydrocephalus) by producing excess fluid or obstructing fluid flow, thereby increasing intracranial pressure. For this reason, rapid head circumference growth in infants is an important warning sign.

Symptoms

Rapid increase in head circumference and bulging fontanelle in infants

Headache, nausea, and vomiting, particularly worsening in the morning

Irritability, lethargy, and difficulty with sucking and feeding in infants

Balance disturbance, ataxic gait

Seizures

Developmental delay in children, weakness in arms and legs

Diagnosis Methods

The first-line diagnostic tool is contrast-enhanced brain MRI, which shows the tumor as a cauliflower-like mass within the brain's cerebrospinal fluid spaces and detects fluid accumulation (hydrocephalus). If malignancy is suspected, spinal MRI is also obtained to determine whether the tumor has spread to the spinal cord. Definitive diagnosis is made through histopathological examination of tissue obtained during surgery.

Treatment Methods

The cornerstone of treatment is complete surgical removal of the tumor whenever possible. In benign-type tumors completely removed, this is often sufficient and no additional treatment is needed. In more aggressive or malignant types, chemotherapy and, when necessary, radiation therapy may be added based on the child's age and tumor type. In malignant-type diagnosis, investigation of familial genetic predisposition is also important as it affects treatment planning.

Surgery: complete tumor removal whenever possible (often sufficient alone in benign-type tumors)

Temporary drainage or permanent cerebrospinal fluid diversion system (shunt) if needed to relieve accumulated brain fluid

Chemotherapy in malignant or aggressive tumor types

Radiation therapy (radiotherapy) at physician's discretion based on tumor type and child's age
