Diagnosis Methods

Diagnosis involves brain imaging (CT or MRI) to assess how much the brain ventricles have enlarged and to exclude any obstruction in the fluid pathways. Monitoring how symptoms change over time is important for diagnosis. In selected patients, tests in which a portion of cerebrospinal fluid is drained to measure whether the patient experiences relief help inform treatment decisions.
