What is this Condition?

Symptoms

Temporary improvement initially as sodium is corrected, followed by new symptoms onset within 2-6 days
Limb weakness, progressively affecting all four limbs with rigidity
Swallowing difficulty, speech deterioration and unintelligibility
Diplopia, restricted eye movements
Mental confusion, lethargy, in severe cases profound somnolence
In the most severe form, locked-in syndrome: consciousness preserved but body paralyzed (communication only through eye movements)

Diagnosis Methods

Treatment Methods

Prevention: slow, controlled correction of low sodium and frequent monitoring (most important step)
Re-balancing under physician control if sodium rises faster than necessary
Supportive care: respiratory safety, safe nutrition, thrombosis and infection prevention
Physical therapy, speech-swallowing therapy, and long-term rehabilitation
