What is this Condition?

SBRT is an advanced radiation therapy method used to treat tumors in the body. While conventional radiation therapy delivers treatment over many weeks with numerous sessions, SBRT focuses high-dose radiation on the target in far fewer sessions (typically 1 to 5) with millimetric precision. This delivers a powerful dose to the tumor while protecting surrounding healthy organs as much as possible. No incision is made and no surgery is performed. From a neurosurgical perspective, it is most frequently used for metastatic spinal tumors; it may also be preferred for lung, liver, and certain other tumors. Treatment duration is short and patients usually return to daily activities quickly.

Symptoms

Patients with metastatic spinal tumors requiring targeted radiation to this area

Patients with early-stage lung cancer unsuitable for surgery

Patients with limited number of metastatic foci (typically 1-5) suitable for targeted treatment

Patients with appropriately sized tumors in organs such as liver, prostate, and kidney

Cases where short treatment duration (approximately one week) is preferred

Patients appropriately planned regarding risk to surrounding organs and evaluated in an experienced center

Diagnosis Methods

Since SBRT is a treatment modality, determining patient eligibility is fundamental to the evaluation process. The tumor type, size, location, and proximity to surrounding organs are examined in detail using imaging (CT, MRI, PET if necessary). The patient's general condition and previous treatments are considered. The decision is typically made by a multidisciplinary team including radiation oncologists, relevant surgical specialists, and other experts. An important criterion is whether the dose received by surrounding organs remains within safe limits.

Treatment Methods

Detailed imaging is performed before treatment and the radiation field and organs to be protected are planned at millimeter precision. Special positioning techniques and sometimes breathing control methods are used to keep the patient immobilized during treatment. High-dose radiation is delivered focused on the target, typically in 1 to 5 sessions; each session is performed under image guidance to ensure correct target positioning. The procedure is painless, requires no incisions, and patients typically return home the same day. Regular follow-up is required after treatment to monitor efficacy and possible side effects.
