What is this Condition?
Subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is bleeding into the space between the arachnoid membrane and pia mater. The most common cause is rupture of a brain aneurysm. It begins with sudden, severe headache described as 'the worst headache of my life' - like a thunderclap. It is a life-threatening condition requiring emergency intervention.
Diagnosis Methods
Emergency brain CT detects bleeding. If CT is negative, lumbar puncture is performed. CT or MR angiography is done to investigate aneurysm.
Treatment Methods
If aneurysm is present, it is treated with clipping or endovascular coiling. Intensive care monitoring and vasospasm prevention therapy are applied.
