What is this Condition?

A subdural hematoma is a collection of blood between the dura and arachnoid membranes surrounding the brain. It can be acute (following sudden trauma) or chronic (slowly developing). It is particularly common in the elderly and those on blood thinners. Early diagnosis and treatment are life-saving.

Symptoms

Headache
Changes in consciousness
Speech difficulties
Weakness in arm or leg
Loss of balance
Personality changes

Diagnosis Methods

Brain CT or MRI imaging evaluates the location, size, and effects of the hematoma.

Treatment Methods

Depending on the size of the hematoma and the patient's condition, surgical evacuation or close observation may be applied.
