What is this Condition?

Symptoms

Sudden onset weakness or numbness on one side of the body, in the arm or leg
Speech disturbance: difficulty finding words, understanding, or slurred speech
Temporary vision loss in one eye, like a curtain descending
Sudden severe dizziness, loss of balance, difficulty walking
Double vision or difficulty swallowing
Symptoms begin suddenly and typically resolve completely in a short time (usually within an hour)

Diagnosis Methods

Treatment Methods

Antiplatelet medications (such as aspirin; brief dual therapy in some patients)
Cholesterol-lowering (statin) medications and strict blood pressure-glucose control
Anticoagulant (blood thinner) medication therapy if cardiac arrhythmia is present
Surgical cleaning of carotid artery or stent placement if significant narrowing is present
