What is this Condition?
Normal pressure hydrocephalus is a special type of hydrocephalus seen in advanced age, characterized by the classic triad (gait disturbance, dementia, urinary incontinence). It is a treatable cause of dementia.
Symptoms
Gait disturbance (magnetic gait)
Cognitive impairment and dementia
Urinary incontinence
Balance problems
Slowing (bradykinesia)
Apathy
Diagnosis Methods
Brain MRI shows enlarged ventricles and normal CSF pressure. Tap test (CSF drainage) symptom improvement supports diagnosis.
Treatment Methods
VP shunt placement is effective treatment. Shunt success rate is high in patients with positive tap test. Early diagnosis and treatment improve prognosis.
