What is This Treatment?

Caudal block is a steroid and local anesthetic injection into the epidural space through the sacral hiatus at the tailbone region. It provides pain relief and anti-inflammatory effects for lumbar disc herniation, spinal stenosis, and chronic back pain.

Treatment Process

The patient lies face down. Under fluoroscopy (X-ray) guidance, a needle is placed in the tailbone region and a mixture of steroid and local anesthetic is administered. The procedure takes 15-20 minutes.

When is it used?

  • Radiating leg pain and nerve root irritation caused by lumbar disc herniation
  • Pain and walking limitations resulting from lumbar canal stenosis
  • Persistent or recurrent epidural pain syndromes following spinal surgery
  • Inflammatory radicular pain not improving despite conservative treatment

Recovery and planning

Relief after caudal block may begin the same day or develop gradually over several days in some patients. Duration of effect varies among patients; the outcome is determined by underlying pathology, degree of nerve compression, and concurrent rehabilitation planning. The procedure should be regarded not as a miraculous solution in itself, but as an important tool that controls pain in the right patient and increases movement capability, making subsequent treatment steps possible.
