Blood Gas and Electrolyte Measurement and Monitoring

Serial monitoring of arterial blood gas and electrolyte levels

What is This Treatment?

Regular measurement and clinical correlation of arterial blood gas parameters (pH, pO2, pCO2, HCO3, BE) and serum electrolyte levels (Na, K, Ca, Mg) in ICU patients.

Benefits

  • Enables early detection of metabolic and respiratory disturbances
  • Allows instant monitoring of electrolyte imbalances
  • Provides rapid evaluation of treatment efficacy
  • Guides optimization of mechanical ventilation parameters

Treatment Process

Blood samples are obtained from an arterial line or arterial puncture. Analysis is performed on point-of-care devices or in the laboratory. Results are interpreted in clinical context and the treatment plan is updated.

When is it used?

  • Respiratory monitoring of mechanically ventilated patients
  • Monitoring electrolyte replacement therapy
  • Metabolic acidosis/alkalosis management
  • Assessment of fluid therapy and diuretic efficacy

Recovery and planning

This is a non-invasive monitoring procedure. When arterial puncture is needed, hemostasis is achieved with local pressure.
