Greater/Lesser Occipital Nerve Block
Nerve block for pain control in the occipital/posterior head region
What is This Treatment?
Greater/Lesser Occipital Nerve Block involves temporary blockade of nerve conduction by injecting local anesthetic and/or steroid around the target nerve or nerve group for pain treatment in the occipital/posterior head region. Applied for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes.
Benefits
- Provides rapid and effective pain relief in the target area
- Has diagnostic value in confirming the pain source
- Offers an alternative or adjunctive treatment option to surgery
- A repeatable, low-risk procedure
Treatment Process
The target nerve is identified using anatomical landmarks and/or ultrasound/fluoroscopy guidance. Local anesthetic and steroid is injected with a fine needle under sterile conditions.
When is it used?
- Occipital neuralgia treatment
- Cervicogenic headache
- Adjunctive treatment in migraine and cluster headache
- Diagnostic confirmation of pain source
Recovery and planning
Temporary numbness or weakness may occur after the procedure. The patient is usually discharged the same day.
