What is This Treatment?

A surgical procedure in which a pressure sensor is implanted at a parenchymal, intraventricular, or subdural location for continuous and accurate measurement of intracranial pressure. It guides critical treatment decisions in severe head trauma, subarachnoid hemorrhage, and hydrocephalus.

Treatment Process

A small burr hole is made under local or general anesthesia. A parenchymal fiberoptic sensor or ventricular catheter is placed and connected to an external monitor. Calibration is verified.

  • ICP monitoring in severe head trauma
  • Pressure monitoring after subarachnoid hemorrhage
  • Follow-up after brain tumor surgery
  • Hydrocephalus management

Recovery and planning

The monitor remains in place during the ICU stay and is usually removed after 5-7 days due to infection risk.
