What is This Treatment?

Cryoplasty (cryoablation) is a treatment method that stops pain-transmitting nerve fibers by using extreme cold (-60°C to -80°C). It provides pain control in spinal pain and bone metastases.

Treatment Process

Under CT or fluoroscopy guidance, a cryoprobe is placed at the target area. Rapid cooling using argon gas freezes the target nerve or tissue. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia.

When is it used?

  • Selected spinal and peripheral pain foci
  • Some chronic pain conditions originating from bone or soft tissue
  • Suitable patients in whom interventional options other than RF are being evaluated
  • When the target pain area can be clearly identified with imaging

Recovery and planning

Relief after cryoablation is sometimes immediate, sometimes gradual over several days. Temporary numbness, tenderness, or regional discomfort may occur. The goal in follow-up is not only pain reduction but also increased daily function and decreased need for additional pain management.
