Cervical Myelography via Lumbar Route
Imaging of the cervical spinal canal by injecting contrast through the lower back
What is This Treatment?
A diagnostic procedure in which contrast material injected via lumbar puncture is directed upward to radiologically image the cervical spinal canal. It is used to evaluate disc pathologies, stenosis, and tumoral lesions in the cervical region.
Benefits
- Provides dynamic assessment of the cervical region
- Reliable alternative for patients with MRI contraindications
- High diagnostic accuracy when combined with CT myelography
- Detailed visualization of multi-level cervical pathologies
Treatment Process
Contrast material is administered through the lumbar region. The patient is placed in Trendelenburg position to allow the contrast to reach the cervical area. Images are obtained under fluoroscopic guidance.
When is it used?
- Cervical spinal stenosis assessment
- Cervical disc herniation diagnosis
- Imaging of cervical intradural pathologies
- Cervical spine evaluation in patients unable to undergo MRI
Recovery and planning
Resting with the head elevated for several hours is recommended after the procedure. Generous fluid intake is advised for contrast elimination.
