Lumbar Myelography via Lumbar Route

Imaging of the spinal canal by injecting contrast through the lower back

What is This Treatment?

A diagnostic procedure in which contrast material is injected into the subarachnoid space via lumbar puncture to radiologically image the lumbar spinal canal. It is used to evaluate nerve compression from disc herniation, spinal stenosis, and tumors.

Benefits

  • Dynamic imaging can reveal compressions not visible on MRI
  • An alternative diagnostic method for patients unable to undergo MRI
  • Combined with CT for high-resolution images
  • Effective in evaluating multi-level pathologies

Treatment Process

Contrast material is injected into the subarachnoid space via lumbar puncture. The patient is positioned in various ways to distribute the contrast. Images are obtained with fluoroscopy or CT.

When is it used?

  • Spinal canal assessment in patients who cannot undergo MRI
  • Diagnosis of spinal stenosis and disc herniation
  • Post-operative spinal canal evaluation
  • Diagnosis of spinal tumors and arachnoiditis

Recovery and planning

Bed rest for several hours is recommended after the procedure to prevent headache. Generous fluid intake is advised.
