Neck Dissection (Unilateral)

Unilateral neck lymph node and tissue clearance

What is This Treatment?

Surgical removal of lymph nodes, adipose tissue, and surrounding structures in the neck. In neurosurgery, applied for skull base and neck region tumors (schwannoma, paraganglioma, metastatic tumors).

Benefits

  • Provides comprehensive surgical control of tumor spread
  • Offers complete lymph node assessment for pathological staging
  • Reduces local recurrence risk
  • Can be combined with primary tumor surgery

Treatment Process

An incision is made along the sternocleidomastoid muscle. Lymph node chains, adipose tissue, and surrounding structures are systematically removed. Critical vascular and neural structures are preserved.

When is it used?

  • Neck lymph node clearance in skull base tumors
  • Neck region schwannoma and paraganglioma surgery
  • Neck dissection for metastatic tumors
  • Extended dissection in thyroid and parathyroid surgery

Recovery and planning

Post-operative drain monitoring, wound care, and physiotherapy are required. Preservation of shoulder movements is important.
