What is This Treatment?

This procedure involves draining fluid or blood accumulated in the subdural space through a thin needle inserted via the open fontanelle in infants. It is used for diagnosis and treatment of subdural effusions or hematomas, particularly after meningitis-related effusions and traumatic subdural collections.

Treatment Process

The infant is positioned supine. Under sterile conditions, a thin needle is directed through the fontanelle into the subdural space. Fluid is aspirated in a controlled manner. Ultrasound guidance may be used.

Recovery and planning
