What is This Treatment?
A life-saving procedure creating an opening in the anterior tracheal wall and inserting a cannula in emergencies where the upper airway is completely obstructed or intubation is impossible.

Treatment Process
The neck is hyperextended. A rapid incision is made between the thyroid and cricoid cartilages or over the tracheal rings. The trachea is opened and a cannula or tube is inserted.
When is it used?
- Emergency intervention in complete upper airway obstruction
- Failed intubation situations
- Airway security in facial trauma
- Airway obstruction in anaphylaxis or angioedema
Recovery and planning
After emergency tracheostomy, the patient is stabilized and may be revised to a planned tracheostomy. Close ICU monitoring is required.
