What is This Treatment?
A procedure in which tissue samples are surgically obtained from a peripheral nerve (usually the sural nerve) for diagnosing peripheral neuropathy. It provides critical information for diagnosing vasculitic neuropathy, amyloidosis, sarcoidosis, and inflammatory neuropathies.

Treatment Process
Sural nerve biopsy is most commonly performed. Under local anesthesia, the nerve is exposed through a skin incision at the lateral ankle and a segment is excised. The specimen is processed for pathology and electron microscopy.

- Diagnosis of vasculitic neuropathy
- Tissue confirmation in suspected amyloid neuropathy
- Evaluation of chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy
- Diagnosis of unexplained peripheral neuropathies
Recovery and planning
Permanent numbness in the distribution area of the biopsied nerve may occur. Wound care and suture removal after 10-14 days are required.
