What happens if hydrocephalus is not treated?

Progressive brain pressure disrupts brain development in infants; in adults causes seizures, vision loss, decreased consciousness, and ultimately may lead to death. In NPH, dementia progresses without treatment. Treatment is essential.

Will my shunt last my lifetime?

Usually yes. Most shunted patients keep the system because CSF circulation does not recover. Transition to ETV may be possible in some cases.

If ETV succeeds, is shunt needed?

No. After successful ETV, shunt is not needed. However, 15–30% late failure may occur; in this case shunt is needed.

Can a shunted patient return to normal life?

Yes — most shunted patients return to normal activity, school, work life. High-impact contact sports and deep diving are not recommended, but swimming, walking, and cycling are appropriate.

Does shunt work in every NPH patient?

No. NPH shunt success is 60–75%. To improve success likelihood, tap test (CSF removal test) is performed — predicts how much patient's walking will improve after shunt.

Is ETV suitable for infant hydrocephalus?

Generally no. In infants under 2 years, ETV success likelihood is low (ETV score usually below 40). Shunt is preferred. In children over 1 year with obstructive type ETV is attempted, with conversion to shunt if it fails.

Does shunt require batteries?

No. Shunt is a passive system — it has no energy source. It operates only by pressure difference. Programmable valve setting is done with magnet, no battery.
