What is a spinal cord stimulator used for?

The area of use in this article is chronic (long-term) pain management; especially in selected patients who do not achieve adequate relief from medication and other methods. Is it guaranteed that my pain will completely disappear?

No. The goal is the significant reduction of pain, not its complete elimination. This is precisely why a trial period is conducted before permanent implantation — to test if it truly works for you.

Is the device visible in the body, and can an MRI be performed?

The generator may be felt as a small bump under the skin. MRI compatibility varies depending on the device model; therefore, the specific system implanted is recorded and must be stated before any imaging.

Who is it not suitable for?

It is not suitable for those with an active compression/pathology that can be corrected surgically, those with acute pain, or those awaiting stroke treatment. Suitability is determined individually through clinical examination and imaging.

Which treatments are tried first?

Typically, medication, physical therapy, and, if necessary, interventional pain methods (such as injections, blocks, radiofrequency) are tried. A spinal cord stimulator is an advanced option for selected chronic pain patients who do not achieve adequate relief from these.
