Current Approaches in Cervical Disc Herniation Treatment
Surgical and non-surgical options for cervical disc herniation treatment. Advantages of microsurgical techniques and recovery process.
Cervical disc herniation occurs when the disc between the cervical vertebrae degenerates or protrudes due to trauma, pressing on the spinal cord or nerve roots. Neck pain, pain radiating to the arm, and numbness in the hands are the most common symptoms.
Why Does Cervical Disc Herniation Occur?
The most common causes of cervical disc herniation include prolonged computer use, poor posture positions, trauma, and age-related degeneration. As a result of weakening of the disc structure, the disc content protrudes and presses on nerve roots or the spinal cord.
Conservative Treatment Methods
Conservative treatment is primarily applied for mild to moderate cervical disc herniations. Neck collar use, pain relievers, muscle relaxants, and physical therapy generally provide effective results. 80-90% of patients can recover without surgery.
When Is Surgery Necessary?
If severe pain persists despite conservative treatment, if there is loss of strength in the arm, or if there are signs of spinal cord compression, surgery should be considered. Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) or artificial disc prosthesis are the most commonly performed surgical methods. Success rates exceed 90% with modern techniques.
