Is a pituitary adenoma cancer?

No. The vast majority of pituitary adenomas are benign; they do not spread to surrounding tissues. Although the word "tumor" can be frightening, it does not mean cancer. The problem is either the gland producing too much hormone or the tumor growing and pressing on adjacent structures (especially the optic nerves).

Will I definitely need surgery?

No. Prolactinoma, the most common type, is mostly treated with medication. Small, asymptomatic, non-secreting adenomas can be monitored. Surgery is considered for tumors that threaten vision, cause hormone excess (Cushing's/acromegaly), or are growing.

Is surgery performed by opening the head?

Mostly no. Today, most pituitary adenomas are operated on through the nostril, with an endoscope (transsphenoidal) — there is no incision on the head. Open surgery may only be necessary for selected large tumors.

Will my vision return?

If vision loss is due to the tumor pressing on the optic nerves, timely removal of the pressure can lead to vision improvement or halt further deterioration in many patients. The outcome depends on the duration and severity of the compression — which is why it's important not to delay in cases of vision impairment.

Will I need to take hormone medication after surgery?

Some patients may require hormone supplementation to support gland function; others may not. This varies depending on how much the tumor and surgery affect the gland and is monitored in conjunction with endocrinology after surgery.

In most patients, control is achieved with appropriate treatment; some may experience recurrence over time. Therefore, periodic MRI and hormone follow-up are performed after treatment; medication or radiosurgery (Gamma Knife) may be added if necessary.
