What is this Condition?

Arteriovenous malformation (AVM) is a congenital vascular abnormality in the brain where arteries and veins are directly connected without the capillary network that normally exists between them. The abnormally connected vessels in this area undergo hemodynamic stress over time and may be detected through symptoms such as hemorrhage, seizures, or persistent headaches; in some individuals with no complaints, they are incidentally found on imaging performed for other reasons. The treatment decision is individualized, considering the location and size of the AVM, its hemorrhage risk, and the person's general condition. Each AVM is different, so there is no single type of treatment.

Diagnosis Methods

Diagnosis involves evaluation of brain computed tomography or MRI along with angiography (angiogram), which provides the most detailed visualization of vascular structure. These imaging studies demonstrate the size of the AVM, its location within the brain, and which draining veins are involved; all of these factors directly influence the treatment approach. Risk assessment and decision-making are made by a multidisciplinary team.

Treatment Methods

There are three main treatment modalities: microsurgery (surgical resection of the AVM), endovascular embolization (catheter-based vascular occlusion), and radiosurgery (radiation therapy). In some patients, these methods are used in combination and staged approach. There is no single correct approach for each AVM; the goal is to reduce hemorrhage risk while preserving brain function. The choice of treatment is determined based on the characteristics of the AVM and the patient's condition.
