Cerebral AVM Embolization
Endovascular treatment of brain AVM with embolic material
What is This Treatment?
A procedure in which liquid embolic agent (Onyx, NBCA) is injected through a catheter into the feeding arteries of a cerebral arteriovenous malformation (AVM) to occlude the nidus. Applied as standalone definitive treatment or for volume reduction before surgery/radiosurgery.
Benefits
- Reduces surgical risk by shrinking the AVM nidus
- Can be curative alone in selected cases
- May reduce bleeding risk
- Offers staged treatment in multiple sessions
Treatment Process
A microcatheter is advanced from the femoral artery to the AVM feeding arteries. The nidus is mapped with superselective angiography. Liquid embolic agent is injected in a controlled manner.
When is it used?
- Definitive treatment of cerebral AVMs
- Preoperative AVM volume reduction
- Pre-radiosurgery AVM size reduction
- Emergency embolization of bleeding AVMs
Recovery and planning
Post-procedure ICU monitoring, neurological assessment, and periodic angiographic follow-up are required.
